NAY PYI TAW, 28 Nov-Six staff members from the Archaeology, National Museum and Library Department (North) and the Historical Research Department led by U Myo Nyunt from the Archaeology, National Museum and Libraries Department (North) excavated for the second time Pinle Myohaung in Myittha Township, Kyaukse District, Mandalay Division, from 19 to 24 October.
Of the 30 mounds designated in 2008, Nos 16 and 17, about 200 yards from the east city wall of the town were chosen for archaeological purposes.
According to the findings, the layout of the 16th mound is the same, as that of the pagodas excavated in the early stage in Pyu state cities. The 30 ft x 30 ft mound has a 16-foot diameter circular-shape stake in the centre. Like mound Nos, 7, 8, 14 and 15, the 16th mound is deemed to be a religious building.
The mound was built of 18-inch, 9-inch and 3- inch bricks. Its layout is simple and clear, like that unearthed in such Pyu state cities as Beikthanoe and Hanlin. Three earthen pots with broken bones and an iron nail were found inside the building.
The layout of the 17th mound is in square shape.
And the mound has different shapes from that of any other ones which were excavated from 1979 onwards. Five earthen pots with bones, 10 coins, and 17 beads of Pyu Period were found inside the mound, which is considered to be a religious building.
The mounds in the religious buildings discovered in Pyu state cities such as Vishnu, Hanlin and Srikestra have earthen pots with bones. So, it is deduced that the mounds Nos 16 and 17 were built in Pyu Period.
In the process, the team also observed the formation of the ground layers in the mounds. It will continue to do archaeological research to find out more evidences of cultural edifices built by the forefathers.
